Ants...........

are in the compost heap again!

Things to do when its raining

It seems to have been a very typical english summer so far and while I haven't been planting I've been 'pottering' and doing a little bit of recycling so to speak and made some plant lables out of some old pallet wood cut into strips and sharpened at the ends with a knife. They are nice and sturdy and wont snap when I tread on them, well thats the plan anyway. Plus I'm in the process of making some seed storage boxes out of pallet wood again so I'll post pics of those when they are ready.

I've also been making my own seed packets and I can hear my other half now 'sighing' at me it would seem that I have become a complete gardening nerd and jobs around the house are piling up so I must learn to prioritize.

The plot in general is well........ lacking. I think with all the rain we've had in the last two growing seasons its washed away a lot of the good stuff. As my cabbages are a bit small and I'm disappointed in them.

I did grow some broad bean 'field beans' to be precise to get some nitrogen in the soil but this had also failed me as I did not keep on top of the area I grew them on and now I have nitrogen enriched weeds that are now lapping up all the goodness. So another lesson learned there I think. The Sweetcorn on the other hand is looking good not as big as my neighbours, but I am looking forward to them all the same. We have some pumpkins growing about 9 or 10 mainly to cover the ground till next year and hopefully they will be ready for my niece's and nephew for Halloween. I think the plan for next year is going to be dig, manure and cover I think and set boundaries for paths etc. So all in all less pottering and more planning and managing. My better half will be pleased.........if I manage this of course.

Sunflowers

Lots of the sunflowers I planted have started to flower. I did try some very large sunflower seeds but the slugs ate them before they even had a chance. So I nursed these at home and I'm quite proud of them. Lets hope everything else planted works this way.......
